Academic Writing

The main purpose of this course is to prepare students for university level writing assignments by reviewing their English grammar and strengthening their writing skills. It also provides a working space whereby students work together, share their writing experiences and give and receive feedback. Overall the students are engaged in a constructive process which eventually will allow them to perceive themselves as writers. By the end of this course, students will be able to obtain proficiency in the use of English grammar, master writing mechanics, utilize writing techniques, use lexical and orthographic elements, explore the full spectrum of the writing process, and master proper diction and language use appropriate for an academic setting. Some examples of what the curriculum includes are: Constructing complex sentences, writing topic sentences, writing supporting sentences, concluding sentences, using transition words, learning the comma rules, avoiding sentence fragments or run on sentences.

IGCSE English – Second Language

The syllabus enables learners to read, interpret and evaluate texts through the study of literature in English. Learners develop an understanding of literal meaning, relevant contexts and of the deeper themes or attitudes that may be expressed. Through their studies, they learn to recognise and appreciate the ways in which writers use English to achieve a range of effects, and will be able to present an informed, personal response to the material they have studied.

The syllabus also encourages the exploration of wider and universal issues, promoting learners’ better understanding of themselves and of the world around them.
